Driving Lottery Sustainability and Beyond

Scientific Games VP of ESG Andy Jackson Shares Commitment to Environment and Responsible Growth

Just two years after becoming a privately held company with a 100% focus on the lottery sector, Scientific Games has formalized its longtime environmental, social and governance efforts around strong guiding principles. Now governed by a board of directors and subject matter experts across multiple disciplines and continents, ESG continues to be integrated throughout Scientific Games’ global business.

Andrew Jackson, the company’s steadfast environmental sustainability expert over the past two decades, was named VP of ESG. The UK-based advocate leads ESG working groups responsible for executing all requirements and initiatives for the company and its lottery customers. Jackson most recently shared his knowledge with European lotteries at several key industry events.

Minimizing Environmental Impacts

Using water-based inks, the world’s largest scratch cards partner—with products representing 70% of global retail sales—produces games on certified Forest Stewardship Council and EU Ecolabel-approved paper board. The paper mill where the board is produced is 100% fossil-carbon emission-free. The scratch cards, packaging boxes and plastic wrap are all recyclable.

When it comes to process sustainability, the Scientific Games Leeds, UK facility that produces scratchcards for European lotteries has reduced emissions by 50% over the past five years. A solvent-free production process emits minimal VOC and has achieved zero waste to landfill. In Montréal, where some European lotteries’ specialty games are produced, 100% hydropower electricity is used.

The green award-winning Scientific Games Enhanced Partnership facility in Warrington, UK, features solar panels and uses electric trucks to deliver products to retailers. The company’s lottery systems technology sites in Europe have also undertaken initiatives to reduce energy consumption and emission footprints.

Expanding Healthy Play & Lottery Literacy

With consumers’ health and well-being in mind, Scientific Games created the Healthy Play responsible gaming program to align with lotteries’ purpose. The company is among the first to achieve the World Lottery Association’s global Responsible Gaming certification. Using science-based tools and guidance, Healthy Play helps increase ‘lottery literacy’ among all stakeholders.

Guided by findings from Scientific Games’ comprehensive research studies in 2021 and 2023, the principles of Healthy Play can be integrated throughout a lottery’s operations. By providing tools to measure the impact of RG efforts, the program helps lotteries grow sales responsibly and sustainably.

Benefitting Communities

Scientific Games is a socially conscious company that actively engages in local giving and outreach in communities worldwide. Partnering with the Red Cross and its international affiliates, the company and its employees have long supported disaster relief and humanitarian efforts. Scientific Games has established a global holiday campaign benefiting those in need around the world and the company participates in several unique community partnerships.

One such partnership is an urban farm on the company’s Montréal campus with local non-profit organization La Cuisine Collective Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. Scientific Games donated land, fencing, electricity and water and constructed a greenhouse for the farm. The company’s employees provide volunteer labor and deliver produce from the farm to more than 40 local collective kitchens and other organizations serving the neighborhood where generations of employees have lived.

Continuing to set the lottery industry’s gold standard for security, compliance and risk management, the company’s strong corporate governance has well-established practices and controls in place, making it a trusted partner to government-regulated lotteries for more than 50 years.

The company is committed to doing business ethically and responsibly and takes great pride in having earned the trust of its customers and the business community. More than 3,000 team members worldwide reinforce a culture of ethics and integrity across all levels of Scientific Games.

Empowering Employees & Partners

Scientific Games fosters a world-class team and inclusive culture of respect, belonging and well-being so that all employees and partners can do their best work. Many employees enjoy successful, long-term careers with the company, and more than 90% of customer contracts are renewed.

Jackson, who firmly believes lotteries and suppliers cannot work in isolation, continues to advise customers about EU legislation and regulatory requirements, including deforestation, shipping, packaging waste, plastic tax and sustainability reporting. His 25-year commitment to R&D and lottery sustainability has established him as one of the industry’s foremost experts on decarbonization, emissions, waste reduction, biodegradable materials, biofuels, and transportation.

Always pushing for improvements and questioning the status quo, Jackson encourages lotteries and their partners to overcome challenges together to achieve their commitments and goals.
